Keep Stink Bugs Out With These Tips

The Carolinas are currently under an infestation of stink bugs, so don't be surprised if you start to notice them hanging around or in your house! Luckily, stink bugs are not harmful creatures (except maybe to your nose). They release a smelly odor when they are crushed, which is a nuisance to homeowners.

Stink bugs are attracted to warmth, which is why they are more prevalent in the colder months. Here are some preventative measures you can take to help reduce the invasion of stink bugs:

Guard the Exterior

The best way to make sure the bugs don't enter your home is by inspecting and preparing the exterior of your home.

• Inspect the outside of your home for any access points, especially around utility pipes and chimneys to prevent the bugs from entering. Seal any openings with good quality silicone or caulk.
• Make sure all door and window seals and screens are intact.
• Stink bugs are also attracted to light, so keep all outdoor lighting to a minimum during the evenings.

But, Don't Forget the Interior

If the bugs do get inside, you have to be very careful when getting rid of them. It's important not to use insecticides inside your home.

• Vacuum or flush any found stink bugs down the toilet. If you use a vacuum, immediately dispose of the bag to avoid releasing the nasty odor.
• Remove all access to food by storing it in airtight containers and regularly taking the trash out. Keep the counters and floors clear of crumbs and residue.
• Make sure you properly ventilate your basement, attic, and garage with a dehumidifier and cover chimney and attic vents with screens.
